Gi butterfly guard pass

]]> Pedro Sauer BJJ Brown Belt, Tony Rinaldi demonstrates a butterfly guard pass for the gi (although he says it will be fine no-gi too). Something to try out on the mats!

The gi (or shorts) grab isn’t very clear and I’ll likely mess that up…but not before all the guillotines (a weakness of mine) I foresee myself getting caught in as I try to flatten out my opponent. Then it will be triangles galore when I try the actual pass!!

    Fireman’s carry and variations

    ]]>     I couldn’t find any tutorial videos for the exact variation of the fireman’s carry that we did in BJJ class 162. All the videos I found were either a standing or kneeling variation, while I would describe the one we did as a “sliding, sitting” fireman carry.

    This blurry Spanish video is wrestling oriented, but it has the same variation of the throw (the grips might be different) with the sitting and leg-positioning. It’s identified as a sit-down and later as on-knees firemans carry.

    And just for good measure, here’s another BJJ variation that I want to show as the video has a great nugget of advice in adapting a technique to a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mindset – that is, besides the obvious gems in the actual takedown setup, technique, and submission.

    ]]>     Skipped BJJ class. I have a policy – if wounds sting after a shower – I’m not going to BJJ. I’m not risking infection with open wounds!!

    I did get to find this nice no-gi guard pass. A lot of useful tips in this video. Enjoy!

    JJ Machado no gi guard pass

    ]]>     My incapacity to pass no gi lately is really bothering me.

    So I decided to go look for videos on no-gi guard passing. Here’s one I found

    Like many BJJ classes lately, this videos has a few of those “Aaha, that’s the trick!!” moments in them. It’s when you keep trying something and you’re not getting it, then someone shows you the right way and it’s this one small detail….

    Standing to open guard sweep to knee-on-belly to armbar

    ]]>     Here’s the second technique we went through in BJJ Class 141.  Sorry, I haven’t decided what to name the new snowboard instructor just yet…


    Noob and Boarder both standing.  Boarder has a deep grip on Noob’s lapel.


    Boarder jumps up to pull guard.  Right leg first…


    …then the left leg just a split second behind, that’s one leg at a time.  Boarder crosses his ankles to get closed guard.  His deep lapel grip helps to keep him upright.  But he doesn’t want to stay in that position.


    Boarder releases the closed guard,  releases his deep collar grip, and goes on his shoulders on the mat.  At the same time, he also grabs Noob’s right sleeve with his left hand.


    Boarder pulls on Noob’s right arm as he plants his left foot on Noob’s bicep, just like in spider guard.


    At the same time, Boarder hooks his right foot just under Noob’s right knee.


    And at the same time, he grabs Noob’s left leg with his arm.  (Note:  Boarder’s left leg is still tight on Noob’s right arm, it just looks like it isn’t in the photo, but it should be)


    Boarder then shrimps right, so that he puts himself under Noob.  (Note:  Again, Boarder’s left leg is still tight on Noob’s right arm)


    The position should look like this, but with Boarder’s left hand gripping Noob’s right sleeve.


    While pulling Noob’s right arm toward the mat in a big circle and simultaneously lifting up with his hooked right leg, Boarder is able to make Noob fall forward…


    …and sweep Noob and use the momentum to help get Boarder into knee-on-belly.


    Boarder still has his grip on Noob’s right sleeve.  Boarder quickly controls Noob’s right arm…


    …brings his leg over and falls back to finish with an armbar.
